The best time to combat a PR crisis is before it happens. Being proactive allows you to be ready to respond, thus recovering and restoring your personal, or organizational reputation as swiftly, and fully, as possible.
First, you need to prepare a crisis management plan and elect the best team members to execute it before disaster strikes. The plan should include possible crisis scenarios, talking points, audiences to notify, and contact information for your PR team. Remember, a single comment from an employee to the wrong reporter can make a large impact, so ensure everyone is on the same page in order to prevent potential media hiccups.
In today's world, there are few secrets. And when it comes to a crisis, or any public relations issue, the best thing you can do is be honest. However... messaging is still extremely important. Sure, no one likes to talk about "spinning" the truth. Yet in reality, that is usually what needs to be done in any uncomfortable situation.
Often times in crisis, someone is going to have to issue an apology. Offering a sincere apology will go a long way in healing any wounds you've made to your personal, or business reputation.
The last thing you want to have happen is to be caught off-guard, stumbling for your words and feeling off balance. Being ready to respond will allow you to recover quickly and nimbly.
When a crisis situation arises, there will always be a lesson to learn. Sometimes, if the situation is handled poorly, the lesson is more painful than it needed to be.
